Realistic Traffic Generation from Static Traffic Matrices for Optical Network Simulations
Static traffic matrices are used to describe the expected traffic volume between each source–destination node pair in Core Optical Networks. However, a static matrix does not directly define how individual connection requests arrive over time, or in which order they are processed. These modeling choices can significantly influence simulation results, especially in resource provisioning studies. Therefore, realistic traffic generation is important for evaluating optical network algorithms under more meaningful conditions.

The objective of this work is to design and implement traffic generation methods that convert static traffic matrices into realistic sequences of connection requests for a MATLAB-based optical network simulator in a multiperiod scenario.
