Node Consolidation Optimization Study in Fiber-to-the-Building Deployments

A Fiber-to-the-Building (FttB) deployment refers to the real-world planning of fiber layout from the Optical Line Terminal (OLT), located at the Central Office (CO), to the Optical Network Unit (ONU), located at the customer premises (in this case, buildings). Generally, there are two types of FttB architectures: Point-to-Point (P2P) and Point-to-MultiPoint (P2MP) (for example, Passive Optical Networks (PONs)). New generations of PONs offer greater reach, thereby facilitating node consolidation of COs. Reducing the number of COs (node consolidation) results in a substantial reduction in Capital Expenditures (CapEx), as PON-based deployments can cover a very large area.
We have a layout of an already deployed P2P FttB network in a region of Germany. This work is planned to investigate the optimal number and locations of the COs that need to remain active from a total of 16 locations, covering over 10,330 buildings. This planning must be done on a real-world network with the main CO (and/or COs), which aims to aggregate the surrounding access networks. A similar work can be studied in [1]. Fig. 1 shows an example of how the COs can be connected via a backbone infrastructure layout, using either a Steiner Tree or a Shortest Path.
