Assessment of Impact of Single-Link Failure Using Different Metrics

Optical networks carry high-capacity data between different network nodes. After a set of connections has been set up, some links become more critical than others because they carry large amounts of traffic. A single fiber/link failure can therefore disrupt multiple services. Before developing advanced protection or restoration mechanisms, it is useful to first assess how vulnerable a provisioned network state is to individual link failures. This thesis focuses on a simple survivability assessment, and the impact on already established connections is measured.
The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the network state using affected and disrupted capacity, average failure impact (load distribution), and to identify the most critical links in the network under different traffic load conditions.
