When Documents Must Stay Offline

On July 1st, the Research Institute CODE hosted GenAI Wednesday Munich for the first time. The event focused on locally deployed AI systems and explored how organizations can leverage modern AI technologies while maintaining full control over sensitive data and confidential documents.

Following a welcome address by Dr. Doris Behrendt to around 70 participants, Mathias Scholaut, doctoral researcher at the Chair of Applied Security Analysis led by Prof. Dr. Arno Wacker, delivered the keynote entitled "Local AI for Documents."

During his 30-minute presentation, Schlolaut highlighted typical AI use cases, including the analysis of large document collections, automated summarization, and question answering across scientific publications, internal reports, contracts, and meeting minutes. He demonstrated how Large Language Models (LLMs) can significantly improve knowledge discovery and document analysis.

A particular focus of the talk was on scenarios in which confidential information cannot be shared with external cloud services. Schlolaut presented locally deployable AI models and discussed their practical applications. He provided an overview of available tools, suitable models (including GPT-OSS:20B) typical hardware requirements, and the effort involved in implementing, operating, and maintaining such systems. Using real-world examples, he also examined the opportunities and limitations of local AI solutions and discussed the scenarios in which they offer the greatest value.

The keynote was followed by an interactive discussion and Q&A session, giving participants the opportunity to explore open questions with Doris Behrendt, Mathias Schlolaut, and Daniel Seufferth and to exchange practical experiences. The event concluded with a networking session that encouraged further discussions, professional exchange, and new connections within the AI community.
