Solution of optimal control problems in non-convex prismatic domains using anisotropic finite elements.

The talk presents a linear-quadratic optimal control problem based on a partial differential equation on a non-convex prismatic domain. Based on efficient solution methods for the partial differential equation an algorithm known from control theory is applied. It is shown that there is no degradation in efficiency compared to uniform meshes on convex domains. Analytical results and numerical examples show that the solution can be estimated with a convergence order of 2, although the control is estimated by piecewise constant functions only. Piecewise linear approximations are used for the state and adjoint state. The key ideas are to use a well chosen mapping from piecewise linear to piecewise constant functions and a postprocessing that computes the final approximate control from the approximation of the adjoint state.
